The Tropical Ecology Mentorship Program of Southern California (TEMP) offers research opportunities to undergraduates wishing to conduct field ecology research in a tropical rain forest. TEMP Scholars will spend the summer conducting independent field research in a tropical rainforest under the mentorship of Costa Rican scientists with the Organization for Tropical Studies and professors at their home institutions. Only introductory Biology or Environmental Science coursework is prerequisite. University students at all grade levels are eligible, and no experience with Spanish is required.

During the summer, participants will work out of La Selva Biological Station in northeastern Costa Rica.  The mentoring team includes Dr. Terry McGlynn (Cal State Dominguez Hills), Dr. Beth Braker (Occidental College), Andrea Romero (University of Kansas, PhD Candidate), and Costa Rican scientists associated with the Organization for Tropical Studies.

Participants will receive a summer stipend of $4500, full support for all expenses (travel, lodging, meals and supplies) for working in Costa Rica, and may have the opportunity to present the results of their research at national or international conferences. Participants may apply for renewal in subsequent years and students are encouraged to apply early in their college careers.

Students selected as Tropical Ecology Mentorship Program scholars, supported by the National Science Foundation, will participate in a year-round research agenda under the mentorship of professors at their home institutions.  Additionally, the program plans to offer opportunities to applicants as research recruits who conduct short-term research as field technicians.

After reviewing the application, questions from students at CSU Dominguez Hills may be addressed to Dr. Terry McGlynn; students at Occidental should contact Dr. Beth Braker.
