The Tropical Ecology Mentorship Program of Southern California (TEMP) is a year-round program offering research opportunities to undergraduates oriented towards field ecology. TEMP Scholars will join the laboratory of a tropical ecologist to conduct independent field research in a tropical rainforest. Only introductory Biology coursework is prerequisite. University students at all grade levels are eligible.

During the summer, TEMP scholars will work out of La Selva Biological Station in northeastern Costa Rica. During the academic year, TEMP scholars conduct research with their mentors in Southern California and participate in joint TEMP activities at CSUDH and Occidental College. The mentoring team includes Dr. Terry McGlynn (Cal State Dominguez Hills), Dr. Beth Braker, Dr. Victor Carmona (Occidental College), Dr. Javier Espeleta (University of Minnesota), and Dr. Marcelo Ardon (Duke University).

TEMP Scholars receive a summer stipend of $4000, full support for all expenses (travel, lodging, meals and supplies) for working in Costa Rica, and additional support for traveling to present the results of the research. TEMP scholars receive one-year awards and may apply for renewal, pending continued support of the National Science Foundation.

TEMP scholars must be dedicated to making the most out of this opportunity and develop a project tied to the research agenda of their mentor. In addition to spending the summer in Costa Rica, TEMP scholars must become engaged in the research before leaving to Costa Rica, and complete a unit of research after returning. TEMP scholars are required to write grants for their projects and present at a scientific conference.

Questions and applications from students at CSU Dominguez Hills may be addressed to Dr. Terry McGlynn; students at Occidental should contact Dr. Beth Braker.

The Tropical Ecology Mentorship Program of Southern California is supported by the National Science Foundation (awards OISE-0526551, OISE-0526561, OISE-0749047)
